My Availability...

I am selective about accepting clients and projects. Typically I work on only two, and never more than four, client projects at a time. With family, personal projects and hobbies, pro bono activities, client work, and other business interests, my calendar is typically full several weeks to months in advance.

My Fees...

I work against specific objectives with clearly established outcomes and timing, contributing to client business goals. My fees are always based upon the project, and never upon time units. That way you're encouraged to call upon me without worrying about a meter running. This works better for these type of collaborative partnerships.

There are some situations where a fixed fee approach may seem impractical. This may be due to unexpected events, inadequate planning, or where a makeshift solution with unclear boundaries is preferred by the client. In these cases, the client pays a retainer, which covers a certain amount of access to me over a period of time. If more access or time is needed, and my availability allows for it, extensions may be granted. The most common application of this is for Ad Hoc Troubleshooting under emergency circumstances. TIP: Some folks like to retain me proactively to insure availability when a crisis hits.

HEADS UP: When we talk about your project, one of the first things I'm going to ask you to explain is:

What is the benefit to your business (or to you) of doing this work?
It is important that I help you achieve goals that are material to your business and that are substantial enough to justify our mutual investments of time, energy, and capital. I expect you to be anticipating an attractive return on your investment. In most cases, this means at least a 2x and often 10x return or more on your investment (the higher end is especially common on projects that have recurring benefits). If the problem or opportunity under consideration doesn't have high enough returns for you, it certainly won't for me either.

The actual dollar amount involved is irrelevant. I work on projects small and large. However, the benefits must be clear, the underlying goals conveyed, the measures of success agreed upon, and the return on investment attractive to both of us.
